About James

I have spent close to 20 years in the Web Enablement space. I moved from being a self-taught founder to directing product strategy for some of the biggest names in the hosting industry. My journey started almost two decades ago when I launched Aspiration Hosting. I built that premium brand from the ground up and eventually led it to a successful acquisition.

Throughout my career at companies like DigitalOcean, Cloudways, and WebPros, I have established myself as a Product Leader and a specialist in product modernization. I focus on taking complex products and re-engineering them for market success. In my current role I lead a team of Product Managers and oversee a global portfolio of brands. I ensure our roadmap aligns with both technical excellence and business growth.

I have led product through major milestones like the $350M acquisition of Cloudways. I have learned that the best products are built at the intersection of deep community insight and execution. This includes everything from overseeing our WordPress suite of products to directing the launch of the Nova AI Builder and WebInsights data platform.

I am a big believer in "Full-Stack" product leadership. I focus on understanding the technical "how," the business "why," and most importantly, the customer "who." I am just as comfortable discussing cloud infrastructure as I am refining a go-to-market strategy for an entire product suite.

Jan 2018 - Mar 2022

Partnered with the founder of MDDHosting to modernize the company’s technical direction and brand authority. This included the strategic productization of a StorPool-powered infrastructure to position the brand as a premium, high-availability leader.

Aspiration Hosting

Founder

Apr 2008 - Dec 2017

Founded and scaled Aspiration Hosting, a premium, US-based managed hosting provider specializing in high-performance eCommerce environments. Over nearly a decade, I led the company from a bootstrapped startup to a global operation serving thousands of clients across five continents, culminating in a successful acquisition by a US-based digital agency.

Identified and captured the "performance-hungry" Magento niche at its inception. I developed a high-margin business model by prioritizing resource-heavy environments, integrating cutting-edge performance stacks (LiteSpeed, LiteMage), and maintaining aggressive hardware upgrade cycles to ensure market-leading site speeds.

Executed a multi-brand strategy by launching NoFrillsReseller, a secondary brand focused on market segmentation for the value-driven reseller sector. This enabled broader market capture while maintaining the "Premium" integrity of the flagship Aspiration Hosting brand.

Served as a recognized leader in the Magento ecosystem, eventually being named a Magento Master (Maker). I leveraged this deep community involvement to align the product roadmap with real-world developer needs, personally overseeing the technical optimization of server environments and the customization of the WHMCS-driven client experience.

Pioneered a "Full-Stack Support" philosophy by hiring specialized developers to provide application-specific support for Magento store owners. This key differentiator drove industry-leading retention and positioned the company as a trusted partner for B2B and B2C eCommerce platforms.

Community Engagements

I’ve always believed the best product roadmaps aren't built in a vacuum. They’re born at the intersection of community insight and technical execution. While my journey began in the trenches of web forums like WebHostingTalk, I’ve expanded my focus to include high-level strategic groups and regular in-person engagement.

Community as a Foundation

For over 15 years, I served as a moderator and committee member within the Magento ecosystem. That experience was my training ground. It taught me the importance of interacting with open-source communities. It shaped how I approach product leadership today with an emphasis on transparency, feedback loops, and real-world problem-solving.

The Human Edge

I’ve found there is no substitute for the candid feedback you get while attending industry events like CloudFest or WordCamp. These face-to-face interactions provide reactions and suggestions that a scheduled meeting might miss. Whether I’m speaking at a conference or chatting with a peer between sessions, these connections help me see where the industry is heading.

A Culture of Conversation

When I’m not at a physical event, I stay active in the Making WordPress Slack and engage in strategic discussions across LinkedIn, Reddit, and specialized communities like Post Status and The Admin Bar. I encourage my team to prioritize this same level of outreach. I believe our products must solve the actual pain points of users. Whether it's through video calls, online forums, or in-person meetups, the goal is always to stay connected to the people using what we build.
