Product leader · 20 years in hosting, WordPress, and AI
James Lee
Group Product Manager at WebPros, leading AI and WordPress products. I have spent 20 years at the infrastructure layer of the web: founding a Magento hosting company, navigating a $350M acquisition, scaling a SaaS email platform, and now building the AI tools the hosting industry runs on.
Background
Twenty years building at the infrastructure layer of the web has taught me one thing: the best products are never built in a vacuum. They are born at the intersection of deep community understanding and sharp technical execution.
I started by founding Aspiration Hosting in 2008. What began as a bootstrapped startup became a premium Magento hosting brand serving clients across five continents. I was embedded in the Magento ecosystem, eventually recognised as a Magento Master, and led the company through to a successful acquisition in 2017.
After the exit I moved into product leadership, joining MDDHosting to modernise the platform from legacy shared hosting to a cloud-native model. That set me up for Cloudways, where I navigated the company through its $350M acquisition by DigitalOcean, launched WordPress SafeUpdates, and led Cloudways Autonomous, a Kubernetes-powered managed hosting product that eliminated manual server scaling for agencies.
At ImprovMX I ran the full product function as Head of Product for a high-volume SaaS email platform. In 18 months: 40% revenue growth, user base doubled to 200,000+.
Today I lead AI and WordPress products at WebPros. Nova is an agentic AI builder I have led from the ground up, built for hosting partners to give their customers a powerful way to create apps and sites. All it takes is a conversation. WebPros Insights is an AI-powered intelligence platform drawing on 2 billion crawled hostnames and hosting panel telemetry to deliver analytics and intelligence across the hosting industry and beyond. WP Squared, WP Toolkit, and WP Guardian are the WordPress tools that hosting partners depend on to manage, protect, and grow their customers' sites. I lead a team of Product Managers across this entire portfolio.
The through-line is the same: understand the community, ship what they'll actually use, and build for the wave that is coming rather than the one that has passed. Candid feedback from events like CloudFest and WordCamp, or from communities like Making WordPress Slack and Post Status, is worth more than any scheduled research session.

Partnered with the founder to modernise MDDHosting's technical direction. Founder
Apr 2008 - Dec 2017
Founded and scaled Aspiration Hosting from a bootstrapped startup to a premium Magento-focused managed hosting company serving thousands of clients across five continents. Built around a high-margin model targeting performance-hungry eCommerce environments, integrating LiteSpeed and LiteMage stacks and pioneering a "Full-Stack Support" philosophy with Magento-specialist developers. Recognised as a Magento Master (Maker) for over 15 years of community contribution.
Alongside Aspiration Hosting, I launched NoFrillsReseller (later rebranded NoFrillsCloud), a secondary brand targeting the value-driven reseller market. Running both brands in parallel for nearly a decade enabled broader market capture while maintaining Aspiration Hosting's premium positioning. Both were led to a successful acquisition by a US-based digital agency in 2017.
